Bosaina El Kahhal

SOLO WORKS & PERFORMANCE

Avant-Pop, Compositional Works & Research-Based Performance

Bosaina’s solo trajectory blends voice-led electronic composition with cinematic atmospheres, dramaturgical structure, and poetic restraint.

Her debut release, New York April – July 2013 / Two Names Upon The Shore (Discrepant, UK)—produced during her time at Dubspot NYC—weaves autobiographical fragments with jazz-inflected electroacoustics and dreamlike field recordings. Described by Boomkat as “a quietly defiant act of romantic minimalism,” the EP marked an early signal of her hybrid, intimate sound.

Mastered by Rashad Becker and released as a dual-sided concept piece, the project explored themes of dislocation, memory, and sonic cartography—establishing the foundations of a practice that is both intensely personal and musically expansive.

In 2014, she became the first Egyptian artist accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy (Tokyo), where she was mentored by Just Blaze, Dorian Concept, and Kerri Chandler. Her radio show Scenery Cairo on RBMA Radio (2015–2016) documented Egypt’s underground through field recordings, archival fragments, and live mixesoffering one of the era’s most comprehensive sonic portraits of the region.

Her solo performances evolved into a research-based repertoire presented under the banner of Herein Lies—a performance framework merging avant-pop songwriting with experimental music theatre. These works drew on literary theory, electroacoustic design, and the dramaturgy of silence and rupture. Premiered at MASĀFĀT Festival (ICA London), the project then developed across multiple iterations including "Darkest Days" at Roter Salon Berlin and "Solitude In Public" an immersive performance at Heart of Noise Festival in Innsbruck, Austria.

In 2021, Bosaina released High Waters, a self-directed visual and sonic manifesto described by Pan-African Music as “a dreamlike piece that crystallizes her many obsessions: fashion, dance, singing and surreal imagery.”

Her performance practice—equally at home in clubs, festivals, and contemporary art institutions—has been showcased across major global stages, including:

  • Sónar Festival (Barcelona)

  • EMAF / Liquid Room (Tokyo)

  • Heart of Noise Festival (Innsbruck)

  • ICA London

  • MUCEM (Marseille)
